INTRODUCTION Common Farm is a legendary racing and hunting grassland farm which has been the home of the late John Manners and his wife Audrey until John’s death in September 2009. The farm has been farmed by the Manners family since 1926 when John was six months old, his father having moved there as a tenant.

There were always cows at Common Farm. John bred Pedigree Friesians and later built up a Naturally Polled Herd. His passion was breeding and racing horses. He had his own stallions and the stock grew up to win hundreds of Point to Points over the years, also many races under rules after he took out a Trainer’s Licence. These included Knight of Love his first Cheltenham winner and of course Cavalero who after winning many Point to Points won both the Aintree and Cheltenham Foxhunters.

John liked to buy problematic or soured horses at The Sales & bring them back to Common Farm, where they loved the farm life and often went on to win. Touch Silver won 8 hurdle races and of course Killeshin, a cripple when he brought him to the farm, won The Eider Chase, the Aintree Foxhunters and came 6th and 7th in the Grand National.

John started many Jockeys on their careers with his encouragement.
The year John died in 2009 he was the leading South Midland Point to Point Trainer and his home bred horses are still winning now. “All these horses over the years were trained on this lovely farm.”
